The Cairns Botanic Gardens are a lush haven where you can relax in the beauty of tropical plants gardens. The botanic gardens are a place for locals to come together, as well as somewhere tourists can visit to get a taste of what the tropics has to offer without having to travel too far from their accommodation.

Location

The Cairns Botanic Gardens are located just outside of the city centre, and they are easy to get to by car or public transport. Located on Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, the gardens stretch through to Greenslopes Street, encompassing 34 hectares. The botanic gardens showcase an amazing array of tropical plants, including many rare and endangered species.

Getting there

The local bus service, Sunbus, stops directly outside Flecker Gardens. There's also another stop near the Chinese Friendship Gardens where you can walk through to Flecker Gardens.

If you're feeling energetic, grab your bag, a water bottle and hat, and enjoy the well-paved footpath from the CBD to the gardens - approximately 45 minutes by foot.

Cairns Botanic Garden Highlights

Three top highlights of the gardens are:

- The Tropical Fruit Orchard where you can learn about and sample tropical fruits

- The Rainforest Boardwalk - an easy walking trail through the rainforest with interpretive signage along the way

- The Centenary Lakes - a beautiful area to relax, paddle or fish (with a permit)

Cairns Chinese Friendship Garden

Make sure to visit the Cairns Chinese Friendship Garden too - it's a beautiful, peaceful spot within the gardens. Take a moment to sit on one of the benches and appreciate the tranquil setting.

Cafes within the Cairns Botanic Gardens

- Botanic Gardens Restaurant Cafe, open 7am - 4.30pm, 7 days.

- TANK sixty four, open 7am to 4pm 7 days.

Botanic Gardens Restaurant Cafe is nestled amongst the foliage, within Flecker Gardens, whilst TANK sixty four is located within the Visitor Centre.

Tanks Arts Centre

The Tanks Arts Centre is also worth a visit, with its regular exhibitions, live music and theatre performances. Upcoming events are always listed on their website.

Cultural Significance

This delightful garden plays significant part in the preservation and conservation of unique flora and its cultural significance, and you can learn about examples of Aboriginal plant use for bush tucker and medicine.

You can spend your time at Botanic Gardens and learn a lot about the plants there on your own or with family and friends as they have I-pods available for rent that will take you on an informative self guided tour in the gardens.

Bird Watching

There are guided tours available which are very popular; bird watching tours and guides tours up to 2 hours.

Some birds to be on the lookout for are Rainbow Lorikeets, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos and the Torresian Imperial Pigeon.

Sunday Markets at Tanks Arts Centre

Finally, if you like markets, the Tanks Arts Centre holds Sunday Markets once a month from April through to November. The markets are a wonderful opportunity to purchase food and locally made arts and crafts.

Opening hours

Flecker Gardens open every day from 7.30am to 5.30pm

Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory, open every day from 7.30am to 5.30pm

Visitor Centre open 8:30am to 4pm weekdays, 9:30am to 2pm weekends and public holidays, closed Christmas Day.

Other garden areas are accessible all hours.
