What to Expect

Following an early morning pickup from your Surfers Paradise hotel or meeting point of choice (times vary depending on season and will be confirmed after booking), we drive to our balloon launch site in time to see the hot air balloons inflate - an incredible display!

Once all our balloons are inflated and everybody is on board, we fly over the Gold Coast Hinterland. Our flight path offers sweeping views of Lamington National Park & Mt Tamborine and provides the opportunity to spot local birds and wildlife.

After landing we enjoy Hot Air Balloon pack-up games and lots of laughs; then it's just a short drive to O'Reilly's Canungra Valley Vineyard for our gourmet breakfast.

Our breakfast is a real highlight! Choose from a buffet of pastries, fresh juices, eggs & bacon, cereals & fresh fruit - not to mention the champagne! You can choose to dine in the historic dining room or on the verandah overlooking the vines.

To complete the tour we drive you back to your meeting point or Surfers acommodation door to door. We can also arrange to drop you at theme parks, shopping centres & link with a number Gold Coast tours (just let us know after you have booked). We highly recommend staying longer to explore the spectacular Gold Coast Hinterland, Scenic Rim & Mt Tambourine region and sample all that the region has to offer.

Our Crew

Fly with Australia’s leading team of experienced ballooning pilots! Our 8-pilot team fly the most extensive fleet of hot air balloons in Australia, ranging in size from 2 passenger baskets up to Australia’s biggest balloon.

It takes many years of training to become a balloon pilot and in combination with our crew they’re totally equipped and organised every day when our 'floatilla' of hot air balloons take-off.

Meet our senior pilot, Jay

Jay

Jay has been flying balloons for over 20 years and is Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) endorsed to fly Australia’s largest commercial balloons.

Whether he's flying over the wilds of Africa or over the Australian outback, Jay is skilled at operating balloons over a variety of terrains and flight conditions.

In-flight pilot commentary by Jay is a highlight commented on by many of the visitors that balloon under his command.

What do I need to bring with me?

Dress as for a casual walk in the bush, sensible sturdy shoes are recommended. We suggest you bring sunglasses, a hat/cap and dress in layered clothing. During the morning as the sun comes up, the day will become warmer.

Remember there is so much to see from an entirely new perspective, you will want to record it all to relive later, your own camera or video camera are welcome on board. Don't forget your cash or credit card (MasterCard and Visa accepted) for that extra special souvenir of your fantastic hot air balloon experience.

What is the minimum age to fly? Do children pay less?

The minimum age for a child to fly in a Hot Air balloon is 4 years. There are no minimum height or weight restrictions. Children aged 0-3 years may accompany but can not fly. Child prices apply for children aged 4-14 years inclusive.

Is it safe? What safety measures do you have in place?

We have an exemplary safety record with many of Australia's most experienced pilots in our team.

All hot air balloons are required to be fully registered aircraft with the Australian Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) and are subject to regular airworthiness checks by authorised personnel. Pilots need to have different levels of experience before they are allowed to progress to larger balloons and this again is carefully monitored by CASA. Each commercial operation must operate with a nominated Chief Pilot and under an Air Operators Certificate from CASA.

Why fly early in the morning?

It’s a great time to be up and the mornings are just spectacular.

Besides, balloons need cool stable calm winds to operate effectively and the hours following sunrise are the most suitable before the heat of the day.

As hot air balloons are the only form of flight which moves with the wind, the weather is most important. The pilot cannot directly steer but chooses heights carefully to utilise wind currents to sail towards the closest, most appropriate landing site.

What are the balloons made of and how do they inflate?

Balloons are made of ripstop nylon supported on an air-frame of wires and high grade webbings.

We inflate the balloons by stretching out the envelope and attaching it to the basket. A powerful fan is used to inflate the envelope with cold air firstly. When partially inflated, a burner heats the air and the envelope rises above the basket. With further heating, there is sufficient 'lift' for the hot air balloon to fly.

How high does the balloon fly and how it is steered?

Most balloonists enjoy low-level flight as more can be seen. We often see wallabies and other wildlife in the bushland surrounding creeks. The typical hot air balloon flight would be anywhere from tree level to approximately 3,000 ft.

Hot air balloons cannot be steered! Some directional control is possible by ascending or descending into air currents going in a different direction, this information is checked prior to take off by releasing a small helium balloon and checking up to date weather reports. The pilot can raise or lower the hot air balloon by controlling the temperature inside the balloon.

Can I give the flight as a gift? Do you do vouchers?

Yes you can and yes we do! Please see our gifts page.

I'm scared of heights! What about vertigo?

A Hot Air balloon flight is very gentle and stable, and because you start on the ground before gently lifting up, the sensation is quite unlike looking over the edge of a building. We recommend you try it – many of our passengers are surprised at how comfortable and safe they felt flying with Hot Air.

How far in advance should I book?

Due to our popularity with locals as well as visitors, we strongly suggest booking ahead; a week to 3 days is suggested and if you are keen on a particular date, we recommend booking at least one to two weeks in advance. All tickets are 100% refundable and transferable, and are valid for one year from date of purchase (subject to our cancellation policy).
