Self-Drive Hot Air Ballooning in Mareeba: Your Gateway to the Atherton Tablelands
There is a particular kind of magic in lifting off the ground as the sun breaks over the Atherton Tablelands - the patchwork of paddocks below, the mist still sitting in the gullies, and that deep, surprising silence that only ballooning gives you. For travellers who like to set their own pace, our self-drive experience is the easiest way in: you drive to meet us in Mareeba, leave the logistics to our crew, and keep the rest of the day free to explore one of Far North Queensland's most beautiful regions.
Reduced winter pricing - Book direct and travel in June or July to fly the Tablelands' best season at our lowest self-drive rate.

How the morning works
It's a pre-dawn start - the best ballooning always is - but the routine is simple and relaxed.
-
1. Meet us at the Mareeba Heritage Centre
Your exact meeting time is confirmed when you book (it shifts a little through the seasons with the sunrise). There's plenty of room to park your car and leave it safely while you fly.
-
2. Join the crew transfer to the launch site
From the Heritage Centre you'll hop aboard with our team for the short run out to the launch field. Your pilot chooses the launch site fresh each morning based on the wind and weather, so you always fly in the best conditions on offer that day.
-
3. Watch the balloons come to life
The inflation is a spectacle in itself - the roar of the burners and the great envelopes rising in the half-light is a wonderful thing to witness before you ever leave the ground.
-
4. Float over the Tablelands at dawn
Drift gently above the rainforest-fringed ranges and wide country landscapes, with our experienced, qualified pilots and friendly crew taking care of everything. Keep an eye out for Australian birdlife and breathe in the wide-open space.
-
5. Celebrate on landing
Settle in for a relaxed, informal celebration once you're back on the ground - a glass of sparkling wine (or juice) and a light snack to enjoy while you swap stories with your fellow passengers.
-
6. Back to your car
We return you to the Mareeba Heritage Centre, and the rest of your day in the Tablelands begins.
📸 Included with every flight
A free digital photo package, emailed to you automatically, plus a commemorative flight certificate to mark the occasion.

Mareeba: the gateway to the Atherton Tablelands
Most people pass through Mareeba on the way to somewhere else. The locals know better. Sitting at the heart of the Atherton Tablelands - also known as the Cairns Highlands - Mareeba is the launchpad for a region packed with food, wildlife and natural wonders, and it makes a brilliant base for a day (or a weekend) of exploring after your flight.
It's also, quite literally, the home of Australian coffee: the Mareeba district grows the lion's share of the country's coffee crop. You can taste it at the source at Skybury, a multi-award-winning plantation, roastery and café just outside town, where the elevated verandah looks out over rolling green hills. Nearby you'll find mango wineries, boutique distilleries and farm-gate producers along the Mareeba food trail.
For wildlife, Granite Gorge Nature Park lets you hand-feed the wild rock wallabies that live among its tumbled granite boulders - a favourite with families. A little further out, the Mareeba Wetlands are a haven for birdwatchers.

Make a day of it across the Tablelands
The beauty of self-drive is what comes next. From Mareeba you're within easy reach of:

A heritage village known for evening platypus viewing and the 500-year-old Curtain Fig Tree.
Herberton
Step back in time at the Historic Village, or tackle the mountain-bike trails through the ranges.
Malanda & Millaa Millaa
The heart of the famous Waterfall Circuit, including the iconic Millaa Millaa Falls.
The crater lakes
Swim or kayak at Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, or picnic on the shores of Lake Tinaroo.
