In the Gold Coast Hinterland lies one of Australia's most awarded distilleries and liquor brands of the new millennium, Tamborine Mountain Distillery. With the combination of rich red volcanic soil and fresh spring water, the abundant fruit of the mountain is fermented and distilled. A small pot still is used to create the superb spirit that is the essence and foundation of liqueurs, schnapps, vodka and eaux de vie. This boutique, family-owned and operated distillery manufactures from a wide variety of unique Australian botanicals - the range boasts around 80 products, sure to have something for everyone.
Founded in 1993 by Michael and Alla Ward, the distillery has established an enviable reputation as a creator of high-quality products, with word of mouth bringing visitors from across Australia as well as America, Europe and Asia. The distillery has since collected over 300 international awards, making it one of the most recognised craft distilleries in Australia, and was the first distillery granted a licence by the Queensland Government in over 100 years.
With a warm, friendly welcome, a visit often includes the personal touch of Michael and Alla, or one of the younger Wards, who love sharing their story with small groups - the driveway has deliberately been kept narrow to keep out busloads of visitors. The distillery has received national and international media coverage, and has collected gold medals for drops including St Michael's Wort Herbal Spirit, made from 30 herbs, spices, roots and seeds, and a double-gold for its sugar cane spirit, modelled on Brazil's famous cachaça.
It's highly recommended to include Tamborine Mountain Distillery as one of the stops on a day out in Mount Tamborine - it's one of the mountain's very best attractions. Another popular addition is a morning ballooning tour with Hot Air Balloon Gold Coast.
