Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Brisbane

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Brisbane
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane is the first and largest koala sanctuary in the world. Set in attractive natural surrounds on the Brisbane River, over 100 koalas call the sanctuary home. It's a great place to visit if you're interested in Australian native animals - alongside koalas, you can see Tasmanian devils, wombats, dingoes, echidnas, various reptile species, and a platypus. Spend a day at this exciting, popular sanctuary, where you can get up close with the animals in ways many other parks don't allow.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary began in 1927 with two koalas called Jack and Jill. It became known internationally during the Second World War, when Americans - including Douglas MacArthur's wife - visited the park to view native Australian animals. Kangaroos and more than 100 animals freely roam the reserve, sometimes seen with a joey in their pouch - a great Australian photo souvenir for family and friends back home. There are also many colourful Australian parrots and cockatoos, along with other native birds such as kookaburras, emus and cassowaries.
π¨ Koala close-up encounters
As of July 2024, Lone Pine no longer offers koala "holding" - instead, visitors can enjoy a close-up encounter where you stand beside a koala in its tree and give it a gentle pat, for a fee. It's a wonderful way to get near these iconic animals while prioritising their comfort and wellbeing.
Another must-do Brisbane attraction is the ballooning tour with Hot Air Balloon Brisbane. See koala habitat from the air in a hot air balloon and float up, up and away. With door-to-door return transfers to your Brisbane accommodation available daily, it's one of the most popular tours from Brisbane. Your friendly, professional driver will transfer you in an air-conditioned coach to a balloon launch site in the Brisbane hinterland, an hour's drive south of the city, where your hot air balloon takes off. With a return time to your Brisbane hotel at approximately 10:30am after ballooning, you can even visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on the same day! There's also the option to travel to Lone Pine from Brisbane city by river - what a marvellous day out.
