The Lost World Valley, Brisbane Scenic Rim

One of the best-kept secrets in South East Queensland, just over an hour's drive from Brisbane, discover the Lost World Valley on the Scenic Rim hinterland. If you're looking for a quiet, gentle, slow-moving and relaxing short break, driving to the Lost World Valley and enjoying all it has to offer will definitely recharge your batteries.

The scenery is always impressive, whether skies are blue or cloudy - see the vivid mountains of the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park rise dramatically above the valley plain, peppered by the chill rock pools of the Upper Albert River and Christmas Creek. The region takes in Kerry, Darlington and Lamington. One of the best ways to see the Lost World Valley is from up above - take off with Hot Air Balloon Scenic Rim and get a real sense of the majesty, distance and scope of the entire region. Hot air balloon rides happen daily and it's recommended to book well in advance.

When choosing your Scenic Rim accommodation, there's a wide range to select from - a farmstay like Crebra Farmhouse, a wonderful cottage, camping, or self-contained accommodation. Whichever style you choose, you can be sure of a real sense of peace and tranquillity - whether it's views of the farm, wide-open paddocks, or the impressive mountain ranges of the Lost World Valley, take the time to drink in the scenery and the serenity.

Beyond a popular hot air balloon ride, there's also the chance to go bushwalking or wander through local towns - pop into the local bakery and check out the main street for locally produced preserves and organic foods. Better yet, put together a picnic and enjoy it all in the wide-open fresh air.

If you happen to visit for the Lost World's "Arts in the Olives" festival, said to take place in mid-May, be sure to bring your appetite!

Other activities in the Lost World Valley include fishing - find some suitable creek frontage and try your hand at sport fishing for Bass or Spangled Perch, and look out for Mary River Cod, Eels and Eel-tailed Catfish. If you'd rather bring your binoculars for some bird watching, you're in the right place - bring your field guide and see how many species you can spot, and ask the locals which birds are migrating, as the sights change seasonally. You might be lucky enough to see Dollarbirds and Channel-billed Cuckoos, or our favourite, the Azure Kingfisher.
