Mareeba Heritage Centre: The Meeting Point for Your Tablelands Balloon Flight
If you've booked one of our self-drive hot air balloon flights, the morning starts in the same place: the Mareeba Heritage Centre on Byrnes Street. It's where our self-drive guests park, where the crew transfers depart from, and where we return everyone after landing. It's also a genuinely lovely place in its own right - which is why we wanted to give it a proper introduction.

A partnership we're proud of
If you've already poked around the Mareeba Heritage Centre's website, you may have noticed something familiar in the hero banner of their visitor info page: one of our balloons drifting low over the Tablelands at sunrise. That image isn't a coincidence. Ballooning has been part of the Mareeba story for decades, and the Heritage Centre is one of the best front doors to the region we could ask for.
In return, we send a steady stream of visitors their way - and most leave with a coffee, a few new things they didn't know about the Tablelands, and an extra hour in their day they hadn't planned on.
The meeting place for self-drive guests
If you're driving yourself to the flight, the Heritage Centre's car park is where you'll meet us. It's a generous off-street space with long bays for vehicles towing caravans and camper-trailers, so there's never a parking squeeze - even on the busier weekend mornings.
From here, you'll join our crew transfer out to the launch site. Your pilot chooses the exact launch location fresh each morning based on the wind and the weather, so the Heritage Centre serves as our coordination point: the place where we gather, where the pilots make their call on conditions, and where guests and crew come together before heading out. After your flight, we return you to the same car park - and the rest of the Tablelands is yours to explore.
🅿️ Parking: Plenty of free off-street parking, including long bays for vehicles towing caravans and camper-trailers. Cars are safe to leave for the duration of your flight.
Three reasons to stick around
By the time you land and we've returned you to the Heritage Centre car park, it's still early - and you're standing in the middle of one of Mareeba's best destinations. There are three things sharing the same site, and all three are worth your time.
🏛️ The Heritage Museum
Over 6,000 items across 53 exhibits, voted TripAdvisor's #1 thing to do in Mareeba. Highlights include the recreated Mareeba town streetscape, the 1905 Jamieson House, and Australia's largest Tobacco Industry exhibit. A small admission fee applies.
☕ Savannah Café
The on-site café operates 7 days a week and is a brilliant place to land for breakfast after the flight - locally sourced coffee, a fresh seasonal menu, and the now-famous Emerald Falls mural as a backdrop to the service area.
🗺️ Visitor Information Centre
Free entry, free WiFi, and a team of volunteers who know the Tablelands inside out. Ideal for picking up brochures, maps and recommendations for the rest of your day - from Granite Gorge to the Waterfall Circuit.
🦜 Did you know?
The Mareeba region has recorded close to half of all 750 bird species found in Australia, and the surrounding Shire produces around 70% of the country's coffee crop. Worth a stop at the Visitor Information Centre to find out where to see (and taste) both.
Plan your visit
The Heritage Centre is in Centenary Park on Byrnes Street, at the southern end of Mareeba's main strip. It's about 63km west of Cairns (roughly an hour's drive) and 35km north of Atherton if you're coming up from the southern Tablelands.
Opening hours
Mon-Fri 9am to 4pm. Weekends 8am to 3pm. Some public holidays closed.
Entry
Visitor Info Centre is free. A small admission fee applies for the Museum.

Long parking bays for vehicles towing caravans and camper-trailers.
