Our balloons call Mareeba Shire home
Every Hot Air Balloon Cairns flight takes off from the Mareeba area, up on the Atherton Tablelands about an hour inland from Cairns. So it felt right to make things official: we're now a proud partner of Mareeba Shire Tourism.

🎈 Why Mareeba is made for ballooning
Mareeba Shire is where rainforest country runs into the outback. From the basket at sunrise you'll see farmland, mountain ranges and wide open savannah, all glowing in the first light of the day.
The cool, still mornings on the Tablelands give us some of the most beautiful flying in Australia. And once we land, everyone pitches in to pack the balloon away, which is half the fun.
🚗 Driving up yourself?
Our self-drive Mareeba flight meets our pilots and crew at the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre. It's a great way to start a few days exploring the region.
🗺️ What to do once you've landed
You'll be back on the ground before most people have had breakfast, so make a day of it. Here are a few of our favourite things to do around the shire:
Coffee and chocolate
Mareeba is coffee country, with plantations and chocolate makers close to town. The perfect follow-up to an early start.
Granite Gorge Nature Park
Meet the friendly rock wallabies and wander among the giant granite boulders.
Kuranda, Village in the Rainforest
Browse the markets and galleries, or visit the wildlife parks.
Mareeba Wetlands
A peaceful spot to see some of the region's birds and wildlife.
Chillagoe caves
Head further west for limestone cave tours in outback country.
Local food and drink
Boutique distilleries, breweries and farms where you can taste produce straight from the paddock.
