Three day return bike ride from Atherton Tablelands to Bloomfield Track and Cooktown

We sure do live in a great part of the world!

That's Roy's take on Far North Queensland. Recently Roy and mate Ian packed the saddle bags, oiled the chains, and donned the skid-lids to propel their treadlies from the Atherton Tablelands all the way up to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Track, and back again, over three days.

Normally, Roy can be found as one of Hot Air Balloon Cairns' expert ground crew, providing technical support for our aircraft, and manoeuvring our chase crew vehicle through the network of roads around Mareeba to locate our balloon's landing location.

On a few days off a couple of weeks ago, Roy and Ian - another Far North Queensland local from Gordonvale - began their bike ride from Roy's place, Lionshead, very near to the wind farm. They cycled through Mareeba north to Mt Molloy before heading down the Rex Range and on to Mossman.

On to Cape Tribulation

Continuing north, our intrepid explorers crossed the Daintree River by ferry before staying at the Safari Lodge at Cape Tribulation. Shout out to the team at Safari Lodge from Roy and Ian!

Refreshed and energised, it was on to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Track the next day.

Cooktown accommodation was the Seaview Hotel for a well-earned rest.

On Day 3 Roy and Ian back-tracked for their return journey, with a huge slap up breakfast at Lions Den Hotel with a crew of Vietnam vets who were visiting from Cairns.

To quote Roy: "From Lionshead to Lions Den"!

Champing at the bit to continue, their bicycle's barely cool from the rest stop, they hit the road again. At the Daintree Ferry the cycling ended as they got picked up for the final leg.

Big effort here, and great to hear from Roy and see the photos of their jouney.

Roy's crewing every week - catch up and say "hi", and maybe share your own story of adventure around our wonderful region of Far North Queensland.

How do we pack up our hot air balloons?
