A special day at the Races – events in Brisbane and Beaudesert
Definitely, something on the list of most Brisbane locals, is to attend a country race meeting. The romance and fun of a drive onto the Brisbane hinterland, then a day at the races, watching local jockeys and horses run, while sipping champagne and tucking into home-made scones and jam or finger sandwiches, while wearing a colourful hat and a dress bought just for the occasion can’t be missed.
To make a full day of it, Brisbane locals also add into their morning before going trackside, a ride before hand and a champagne breakfast with Hot Air Balloon Brisbane. Floating up over the wide open green spaces of the Scenic Rim, the views from the balloons shows not only the Race Course but also the many local Stud and Racing Stables and 360 degree views from Tamborine Mountain to Brisbane CBD.
It’s about an hour’s drive to Beaudesert Race Course where both the. Beaudesert Race Club and the Hibernian Race Club operate on a racecourse track that has a circumstance of 1,435 metres and a 210 metre long final straight.
Many visitors to the Scenic Rim may not be aware that Kerry Race Club, the existing Club, amalgamated with the Hibernian Race Club, who’s history goes back to 1907. The two Race Clubs then held the first official race in June 1949 where the race was 1,600 metres and had 100 pounds in prize money for a Race called the Hibernian Handicap. Interestingly to know, the Hibernian Race Club got awarded permanent status by the Queensland Turf Club around 1955. With it becoming the only district club in Queensland that is approved as a perpetual 'Charity Race' day.
The Hibernian Race Club runs Charity Race Days every year to assist local community groups with fundraising. The history of the Beaudesert Race Club goes back to the 19th century; their first race was held by the Club in April 1879.The club built the current major grandstand back in 1912, which is still used as the main vantage point to watch all the quality racing action Beaudesert Racecourse has to offer. There are seven race meetings every year at Beaudesert Race Club, with hot air balloon rides available before time at the track on each of them, the key race days are April 25 on ANZAC Day, Melbourne Cup and Beaudesert Cup Day.
