Picked up early in the morning from the hotel in Port Douglas. Along the way in the bus we were told little bits of information until our arrival at the balloons. I should point out it had been raining in Port Douglas, but up on the tableland the weather was perfect. There were 2 30 minute flights. I was on the second, so we started with watching the balloon go up and we continued with chasing it. Once on board, the flight was smooth and lower off the ground than I expected. Best of both worlds. High enough to see a long way to the horizon, low enough to see wildlife and other details on the ground. The staff were friendly and informative and showed they liked what they're doing. Great morning, all pluses and I can overlook the early morning as it was worth it.

As we were staying in the Port Douglas area, we did have departure time of 3:30 am (Yikes!). Since we had about 8 of us going from our larger tour group, we had a dedicated bus and did not make any stops until arriving in Mareeba, a small town in the table lands. We took a bathroom and coffee break as we waited for the balloon pilots to decide which site the balloons would depart from. From there, on to the balloon launch site. The balloons were among the largest passenger hot air balloon made and our basket accommodated 12 passengers plus pilot. Once airborne, we drifted across the lush countryside for about 45 minutes. We passed over avocado and mango farms, brush lands (with some wallabies) and other green lands. Our bus driver (to and from the balloon ride) was Jada and she gave us a wonderful monologue about the area, ballooning and other interesting stuff throughout the ride.
